3rd Infantry Division Soldiers from WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Cold War, & the Global War on Terror stand guard in front of the Division patch. In the foreground, a silver wyvern (type of dragon, found in medieval heraldry) stands atop a rock and proudly displays its colors. The wyvern symbolizes one of the designations by which men of the Division were popularly known: "Blue and White Devils.” Below the wyvern, the slogan “NOUS RESTERONS LA” (“We Will Stay There”) is displayed in brass; “ROCK OF THE MARNE” is chiseled in bold letters into the rock. The phrases are indicative of the 3rd Infantry Division's firm stand against the German offensive at the Marne River in World War I.
The original 40” x 30” acrylic on canvas painting was completed in 2010. One of the earlier sketches for the painting featured Rocky, the 3ID Bulldog mascot, in front of the Soldiers. The Rocky image was replaced by the wyvern because I wasn’t confident I could secure copyright permission for use of Rocky from the Walt Disney Company.
Framed canvas giclées are available for $150.00 (shipping will be calculated upon purchase; we pay the sales tax for Georgia residents). The walnut-colored floating framed Canvas measures 24" x 20" x 1.25" (25.4" x 21.4" x 1.8" with the floating frame). Sale of the earlier limited-edition Rock of the Marne lithographs (20" x 16") has been discontinued.
